Title: Update of Simple Machine Forum software
Post by: admin on Jun 27, 2025, 10:09 PM
SMF have released a minor update to the forum software. We are currently on 2.1.4 and the new update is 2.1.6.  The update is mainly bug fixes and I will try and do the update in the middle of next week after I have taken a full backup.

I expect the update will take less then an hour, but I will know a bit more detail as I will test it out on a backup system first. I will post an update around Tues next week.

OK, I had a go at updating my test system. The update is in two parts:

1) update to version 2.1.5   (this is the main update)
2) update to version 2.1.6   (this fixes a few issues with the main update)

I tried the one click update process o go to 2.1.5 and it seemed to go OK, but completely messed up the format of the forum. It was not obvious what was wrong and the update on the UCET server is on hold for at least a week while I try and fix my test system to run the 2.1.6 version with a recent snapshot of the production server.

If I can get this working then I will schedule a time to do the upgrade - this is likely to take a day if I end up doing the install from scratch. I will post a schedule once I am sure what is needed.

OK, I took a snapshot of the current UCET database tonight and managed to load it onto the test server running the 2.1.6 software. Everything seemed to come up OK. I still have some shakedown tests to do over the next couple of days, but if these work out OK I hope to update the main server on Saturday 12th July as noted below:

UCET website downtime

The forum will be down Saturday from about 10.00 Please do not attempt to login as anything posted will be lost forever. It would be really helpful if people didn't post attachments or change avatars between now and Saturday as it adds a bit more complexity to the update. If I see later attachments I will try to add them manually - but this is fairly messy.

OK, the forum has been reloaded onto the new software base. There may be a few glitches and I have yet to add a few smileys.

Hopefully everything is OK, please PM me if you see any errors.

Cheers,
Dave

There is a reported problem with SMF 2.1.6 in that mails (for registration, change of password etc) seem to get stuck in the queue and not delivered. There is a fix and I have now applied it so that hopefully the problems will go away now. I still have an outstanding issue with mail delivery to yahoo accounts and am looking at this.
